• What is the overall purpose of the role?
To deliver the services outlined in Big Lottery Youth Capacity grant who are funding this project for an initial 12 month period
Answerable to the project manager in support of the development of a youth-led approach to an employability and health & well-being pathway for young people within a community cycling hub in Bradford City Centre (www.capitalofcycling.org).
Promoting the health, well-being and employability of young people, helping them reach their full potential. Helping to hold a safe and supportive environment where young people learn to treat themselves and others with kindness and respect and discover new ideas and activities and learn, experiment, make mistakes and grow into motivated, positive, resilient, caring and active citizens.
• Key activities and responsibilities
Welcoming young people into the building, ensuring everything is running smoothly and supporting young people engaging with the activities.
Liaising with partners in the delivery of a weekly drop-in youth cafe. Supporting the development of structures which ensure stable and lasting youth participation in the delivery of services and programming of events within the indoor cycling track, workshop and events space.
Support work-placements and a youth volunteering program.
Working alongside young people organising positive activities and conversations, taking accountability for security and safe working within the youth sessions.
Supporting the delivery of partnership projects
Having conversations with young people, identifying issues affecting them and how their needs can be met
Mentoring, coaching and supporting individuals, encouraging young people to develop their self-awareness, independence and individuality and work as part of a team.
Identifying where targeted youth support is needed and facilitate referrals and connections
Helping ensure that all evidence of projects are properly documented, and that work is evaluated and reported in accordance with contractual commitments
Keeping registers, writing evaluation reports and inputting data.
Taking part in outreach activities, both independently and in partnership with other services
Developing and building strong community relationships
with external stakeholders and internal stakeholders
and developing relationships with youth networks in Bradford.
Staying informed on legislation, local and national issues, and best practice in youth work
Ensuring child protection procedures are followed and that the safeguarding of young people is paramount. Carry out all duties in accordance with Bradford Safeguarding Children Board.
• Knowledge, skills and abilities
To work cooperatively and flexibly with job share partner delivering the services directly or indirectly.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to quickly establish positive relationships with young people and motivate them to participate in activities and events
Good organisational and administration skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office
Understanding and appreciation of the importance of monitoring and evaluation in a youth work setting
Positive about embracing challenge and change, open to experimenting, new ideas, reflective practice and working with other organisations in a spirit of partnership
Ability to prioritise effectively and enjoy multitasking in a busy environment
A believer in strongly supportive environments, sharing and being open with colleagues
A working understanding of safeguarding children and young people and how to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
A working understanding of equality and diversity with the ability to challenge discriminatory behaviour.
Experience of basic bike maintenance is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.
